“This weekend, we offered the President a bipartisan proposal to avoid default so we could have the time we need to put together a serious plan for getting our house in order, and he rejected it out of hand. Not for economic reasons. But, as he put it, `to extend this debt ceiling through the next election.’ Time is running out. Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Saturday regarding the new deficit reduction legislation being developed by bipartisan Congressional leadership:

“The President wanted to know that there was a plan for preventing national default. The bipartisan leadership in Congress is committed to working on new legislation that will prevent default while substantially reducing Washington spending.”

‘I appreciate the Speaker insisting on reduced spending and opposing the President’s call for higher taxes on American families and job creators.’
