‘We will not let Memorial Day pass without doing our duty’

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Thursday on the supplemental emergency spending bill:

“It’s now been 101 days since the President asked Congress to approve an emergency war spending bill. One hundred and one days, 31 votes, and this bill is finally on its way to conference.

“Yesterday the Senate once again rejected the notion of an arbitrary surrender date. We made a responsible bipartisan commitment to get a bill to the President’s desk that he can sign before Memorial Day.

“My expectation is that the conferees will strip the surrender date and extraneous funds from the original bill.

“There’s also general agreement that we must hold the Iraqi government accountable to a political process that allows for reconciliation.

“The Senate will not cut funds for troops in the field. And we will finish this process by Memorial Day. This is a victory first and foremost for our troops. And it’s a clear renewal of our strong, confident commitment to security and the national defense.

“At the end of next week, we’ll stop to remember those who’ve sacrificed for this country. We should not forget that many are in the field of battle now. And we will not let that day pass without doing our duty to these brave men and women and finishing this bill.”

‘I voted against the Democrats’ budget because it is the prescription for the largest tax hike in history’

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell released the following statement Thursday on the conference report for the Democrats’ tax-and-spend budget:

“At the beginning of this Congress we pledged to work together across party lines to benefit hard-working Americans. But by penalizing them with an extra $736 billion in taxes, this budget does not live up to that promise.

“I voted against the Democrats’ budget because it is the prescription for the largest tax hike in history, it fails to reform the crisis of entitlement programs such as Social Security, fails to control government spending and piles up trillions in debt. This tax-and-spend budget is a mistake. Sadly, it isn’t just about numbers on a page, it’s about our jobs, paychecks, and economy—and this budget puts those all at risk.”

‘Government is not the speech police’

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement regarding attempts by Congressional Democrats to revive the misnamed “fairness doctrine”:

“Our Founding Fathers understood free speech is fundamental to our nation and sought to protect it with the First Amendment. As a strong supporter of First Amendment freedoms for all Americans, I will continue to work to prevent government limitations on speech.

“The latest attempt by House Democrats to revive the misnamed ‘fairness doctrine’ will silence active political voices and limit the free flow of information. Government is not the speech police and I will not support these efforts to restrict free speech.

“Political debate is among the most important democratic traditions of our nation and a hallmark of free society. We must continue to preserve the right of all Americans to express their views.”

Background

Legislation is being drafted in the House which would require the government to police the airwaves to ensure radio broadcasters are presenting what the government decides are balanced viewpoints. The “Fairness Doctrine,” as it is called, was abolished by the Federal Communications Commission in 1987 because it inhibited debate and the free flow of information.
