McConnell Statement on the Passing of Erlene Himes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement today regarding the passing of Erlene Himes:

“I heard with great sadness about the passing of my friend, Erlene Himes. Her deep faith and passion for inspiring children through reading brought her a lifetime of joy. Although we grieve her loss, we are able to take comfort knowing that Erlene has reunited with Bobby, her beloved husband of nearly 50 years. Together, their work on behalf of students and their community created a remarkable legacy, and I was proud to number myself among their friends. Elaine and I send our condolences to their daughter Renee, their family, and all who loved Erlene.”

The latest made-up controversy is an attempt this week to make hay out of comments Judge Kavanaugh made about the long-ago expired “independent counsels” statute.’

‘This week, I’ve discussed a number of converging reports that highlight the strength of this economy for middle-class families and job creators. U.S. retail sales just increased for the fifth consecutive month. Earlier this year, consumer confidence hit its highest level since 2000. ‘More than a million new jobs already created in 2018. More job openings than job seekers for the first time in more than fifteen years. Over 95% of U.S. manufacturers reporting confidence in their companies’ outlook -- an all-time high. And just this morning, this announcement from the Department of Labor: In the second week of July, new claims for unemployment benefits fell to their lowest level since 1969.’
