WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced today that the City of Paducah has been awarded a $400,000 competitive federal grant from the Delta Regional Authority (DRA). Senator McConnell, who contacted the DRA on behalf of the community, said the grant will be used to help the city rehabilitate a pump station for the Paducah floodwall. Senator McConnell informed the DRA that the floodwall runs through downtown Paducah to protect and minimize the flood risk for 11,000 acres and more than 25,000 of his constituents in the area.

“This is great news for the City of Paducah and I was happy to assist Mayor Kaler and local officials on this important project,” Senator McConnell said. “This critical funding will enable the city to update its current pump station that is experiencing pumping capacity loss, which if failed, could potentially lead to devastating flooding in the community.”

Paducah Mayor Gayle Kaler said, “We would like to thank Senator McConnell for writing a letter to the Delta Regional Authority on behalf of Paducah and McCracken County residents. The protection provided by our floodwall and the pump stations are a top infrastructure priority for The City of Paducah. This DRA grant will be a great help in achieving that goal.”

The DRA grant for the pump station rehabilitation is a part of a much larger effort by Paducah officials who have worked for years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to update and repair the city’s aging floodwall infrastructure to better protect citizens and businesses. In order to complete the comprehensive repair project, Congress must raise the project’s federal authorization cap. Senator McConnell secured in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2016—which passed the Senate in September—an increase in the project’s authorization level to an amount over $31 million. Once enacted, this authorization increase will allow the city and the USACE to complete the priority flood protection project with future appropriations.

Senate Begins Wrap-Up of 114th Congress

‘We’ve got a lot to do, including approving several conference reports and funding the government.’

November 28, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor today regarding the Senate’s remaining work in 2016:

“Over the next few weeks, Senators will work to conclude the business of the 114th Congress as we begin looking forward to the 115th.

“We’ve got a lot to do, including approving several conference reports and funding the government.

“It’s good to see the respective committees making important progress on conference reports for the National Defense Authorization Act and the Water Resources Development Act.

“We’ll work with our counterparts in the House to consider each of those in the coming days and to send final bills to the president’s desk for signature.

“We’ll also take up the 21st Century Cures bill, which contains resources to promote medical research — including advancing regenerative medicine — among many other important provisions.

“Sometime soon, we also hope to take up the Iran Sanctions Extension Act, which provides underlying authorities necessary to re-impose sanctions, if called for, on the country which has continued to exhibit disturbing and aggressive behavior.

“And of course, we’ll work to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government.

“I would also like to note that my friend from Alaska, Senator Murkowski, is continuing her efforts to advance the Energy Policy Modernization Act, which passed the Senate with large bipartisan support earlier this year. As the chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, she’s been a champion of this critical bill and has never stopped working to move it forward.

“I appreciate her work in that capacity, as well as the many other members who have been leaders on each of the issues I just named. I would encourage colleagues on both sides to continue working together so that we can complete our work soon.”

LOUISVILLE, KYU.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made the following statement on Cuba and the passing of Fidel Castro:

“While Fidel Castro is gone, sadly the oppression that was the hallmark of his era is not. It is my hope that the Cuban regime will use this opportunity to turn the page for the good of the Cuban people and for all those living in the Americas. Freedom and democracy are long overdue in Cuba.”
