McConnell Grateful for Support of Colleagues and American People

‘I know I speak for every Republican Senator in expressing gratitude to the American people for entrusting us with this majority.’

November 16, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor today regarding the 115th Congress:

“This morning our conference came together to select the Republican leadership team for the 115th Congress.

“It’s an honor to have been chosen once again by my colleagues to continue serving as leader.

“I know I speak for every Republican Senator in expressing gratitude to the American people for entrusting us with this majority.

“It’s a great responsibility, and one that we do not take lightly.

“I want to recognize Senator Schumer and the new members of his team as well.

“Leading a party, any party, in the Senate is no easy task. Our colleague from New York has got a tough job ahead of him. But he’s pretty tough too. I send him my congratulations.

“Regardless of party though, one thing is clear: We’ve got work to do and I know each of us is eager to get started.

“That includes Senator-elect Todd Young from Indiana.

“I’ve had the opportunity to spend time with him again this week and congratulate him on his impressive victory.

“It was a hard-fought race and he should be proud of the outstanding campaign he ran.

“Of course my friend Senator Dan Coats leaves behind some pretty big shoes to fill — and I’ll have more to say about that later — but I’m confident Senator-elect Young is up to the task.

“We’re all looking forward to him joining us on this side of the Capitol come January.”

WASHINGTON — This morning the Senate Republican Conference elected its leadership team for the 115th Congress: Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as Senate Republican leader, John Cornyn (R-Texas) as Senate Republican whip, John Thune (R-S.D.) as Senate Republican Conference chairman, John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) as Senate Republican Policy Committee chairman, Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) as Senate Republican Conference vice chairman, and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) as National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman.

“It’s an honor to once again have been chosen by my colleagues to continue serving as their leader,” said Sen. McConnell. “I know I speak for each of my Republican colleagues in expressing my gratitude to the American people for entrusting us with this majority. We are eager to work with House Republicans and President-elect Trump to bring the national and economic security our nation is asking for.”

“I’m grateful for the privilege to again help lead my colleagues and build on the progress we’ve been able to make over the last two years in the Majority,” Sen. Cornyn said. “The hallmark Texas principles of limited government and individual liberty will continue to guide me as we work with the new Republican Administration to chart a new direction for the country.”

“I’m honored my colleagues re-elected me to serve as chair of the Senate Republican Conference,” said Sen. Thune. “The Republican-led Congress will work with President-elect Trump and our colleagues across the aisle to continue the work we began two years ago to improve Americans’ economic security and protect our nation. We have a lot of work to do, and we look forward to bringing our country together to address the big challenges we face.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead a unified Republican Policy Committee. We plan to move quickly to support our conference and to work closely with the new administration,” said Sen. Barrasso. “There are clearly policy areas that will be high on the list for the new Congress. Jobs, the economy, protecting our homeland and dismantling Obamacare will drive much of the agenda. It is critical during those first 100 days that we get the policy right.”

“I’m proud that the American people have returned a Republican majority to the Senate to continue advancing their priorities,” said Sen. Blunt. “Now more than ever, it is critical that we maintain an open and robust dialogue with the American people about the challenges they’re facing and what we’re doing to address them. I thank my colleagues for this opportunity, and look forward to continuing our efforts to expand our digital reach, meet people where they are, and help bring this country together.”

“I am excited about this expanded opportunity to serve Coloradans and make their voice heard on a larger stage. I am honored to have the confidence of the other Republican Senators to take on this leadership role and I won’t let them down,” said Sen. Gardner.

McConnell Welcomes Senate Back to Work

‘We still have some work to do – and with some cooperation from both sides, we’ll get it done.’

November 15, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the following remarks on the Senate floor today regarding wrapping up the 114th Congress:

”We’ve had a regularly scheduled election in this country every two years since 1788, right on time. This year’s campaign was long and it was tough. I think everyone’s glad it’s over. I think Americans are ready to come together and move the country forward.

“As President Obama reminded us, ‘[We're] all on one team. This is an intramural scrimmage. We're not Democrats first. We're not Republicans first. We are Americans first. We're patriots first.’

“And now, as he put it, we are all rooting for the president-elect’s success in uniting and leading the country.

“I again want to congratulate President-elect Trump on his victory. I again want to thank the American people for placing their trust in this Senate majority and in the House majority too.

“Speaker Ryan and I had productive discussions with the president-elect last week. We’re both looking forward to working with him.

“But first, there is work to be done in the current session of the Senate.

“We’ll welcome some new members — beginning with orientation this week.

“We’ll bid farewell to some dear colleagues.

“We’ll finish the work that remains before us.

“So welcome back everyone.

“We still have some work to do – and with some cooperation from both sides, we’ll get it done.”
