WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced today that the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has approved a competitive federal grant for $499,500 to Frontier Nursing University (FNU), a non-profit school in Hyden, Kentucky.

The Nursing Workforce Diversity grant will support FNU recruitment efforts and educational opportunities for students who are underrepresented in nursing demographics.

In addition, this funding will help FNU purchase retention and academic performance analytics software and establish a formal partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Senator McConnell contacted HRSA on behalf of FNU in support of this competitive federal grant. “This funding will allow Frontier Nursing University to recruit students from disadvantaged backgrounds and provide important educational resources to support them from enrollment through graduation,” Senator McConnell said. “I was proud to work with FNU to help secure this critical funding. This is a positive development for a university whose graduates serve and support some of Kentucky’s most medically underserved and economically distressed rural areas.”

Dr. Susan Stone, President of Frontier Nursing University, said, “We are grateful to Senator McConnell for his support in our efforts to receive federal funding to implement enhanced educational programs. The ultimate impact of this grant will be to increase the diversity of the advanced practice nursing and midwifery workforce; ultimately improving health care services for families served by our graduates.”

In May, Senator McConnell welcomed to his office in the U.S. Capitol, Angela Bailey, a member of Frontier Nursing University staff.
