Thanksgiving Greeting

November 25, 2014

Louisville, KYU.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell delivered the following message this week in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday on November 27th. The video is available here and a full transcript of the Senator’s Thanksgiving greeting follows:

“Hello, I’m Senator Mitch McConnell.

“Thanksgiving is a time for Kentuckians to gather together and express gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, the many blessings we have received, and the family and friends who enrich our lives.

“Kentucky is also home to many brave servicemembers, here and abroad, and we’re grateful for their sacrifice.

“Despite the challenges we may face in our daily lives, we know all Americans give thanks today for those many gifts, and for our country.

“Have a Happy Thanksgiving.”

Louisville, KYSenate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued the following statement regarding the resignation of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel:

"Secretary Chuck Hagel honorably served the United States as a combat soldier, a U.S. Senator, and as Secretary of Defense. We appreciate his service to the nation.

"It’s important to remember that Secretary Hagel’s departure comes at a moment of great peril for our country. His successor will confront the daunting challenges of: modernizing our conventional military forces to meet the challenges posed by Russia and China; restructuring the force after more than a decade of counterinsurgency warfare; maintaining our dominance in the air and at sea; investing in the next generation of weapons systems to preserve our nuclear triad; and combatting terror whether from Al Qaeda, associate forces, ISIL, or other groups seeking to exploit the ungoverned spaces created by revolt and unrest.  All of these challenges come at a time when the all-volunteer force faces a shortage of resources and investment.  It is imperative that the next Secretary of Defense possess a sharp grasp of strategy, a demonstrated ability to think creatively, and the willingness and ability to work with Congress. And it is critical that the President consider these qualifications and challenges as he considers such an important nomination."

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced today that the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan bill he supported that would better reflect the service and sacrifice of women in the military by updating the federal charter for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States. The bill now goes to the President for his signature.

Senator McConnell was the first Senate Republican to cosponsor the Senate version of the bill.  Senator McConnell worked with his colleagues and Kentucky’s VFW leaders in this effort to update the VFW’s Federal charter for our nation’s women veterans.

“It’s always an honor to secure passage of legislation to honor our nation’s heroes and I will remain committed, through my new role as Senate Majority Leader in the next Congress, to build on efforts to best assist the men and women who served in our military,” Senator McConnell said.

Senator McConnell has long been a leader in Congress for Kentucky veterans. He has been a vigorous advocate for Kentucky’s servicemembers and military families and has supported numerous pieces of legislation important to Kentucky’s veterans, including bills to reform the Veterans Administration (VA), reduce the VA claims backlog and increase cost-of-living-adjustment disability benefits for our veterans and their survivors.
